Design Fiction: Writing, Research, Sketching
This work vest was inspired by design fiction that speculates on a future where water scarcity leads to the reevaluation of what is essential to a good product. Through research, writing, and sketching I created a narrative world to both inspire new products and embroider their backstory.
The vest's chest pockets are designed for the small tools of a man who owns an electronic repair cart. The shell, liner, and insulation are all made from un-dyed cotton to avoid the wastewater created during the dyeing process, a necessity when water is scarce. The lack of dye defines the aesthetic and functionality of the vest, the cloth takes on a patina that reflects how it’s used, making it more personalized the more it’s worn.
